All the praises and thanks be to Allah, we glorify Him and seek His assistance and forgiveness. We seek His protection from the evil of our souls and the wickedness of our evil deeds. Indeed, whomever Allah guides aright none can misguide and whomever He leads astray none can guide aright. Moreover, I bear witness that, no deity is worthy of worship except Allah alone; Who has no associate, I bear witness that Prophet Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. May the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.
It is indeed the favor of Allah and His bounties that He made the five (5) daily prayers obligatory upon this Ummah and made it a connection between the slave and his Master, between the weak, poor servant and his lord; the most Powerful and Self-Sufficient….. Numerous are the visible and invisible benefits in this great obligation. An obligation upon which the entire Islam is built upon. It is the first to be accounted for and when it is acceptable, all the deeds of the slave are accepted. Likewise, if it is rejected, all other deeds of the slave are rejected.
Imam Ibn Qayyim (May the mercy of Allah be upon him) said: "it was reported in a tradition that: "There is no share in Islam for one who neglected the prayer".
Ameerul-Mu'mineen; Umar Ibn al-Khattaab (May Allah be pleased with him) used to write to his governors and would say:" The most important of your affairs with me is your prayers. Hence, one who takes care of his prayers has indeed protected his Deen, and one who neglects his prayers is more prone to neglect other than it and there is no portion in Islam for one who neglected his prayers."
He said: anyone who belittles Salah belittles Islam. People's share in Islam is proportionate to their share in the Salah and their desire in Islam is proportionate to their share in the Salah ….
Imam Ahmad says:" O' slave of Allah, know yourself and make sure you do not meet Allah tomorrow whilst you've not the reverence of Islam in your bosom for surely, the reverence of Islam in your heart is proportionate to the reverence of the prayers in your heart".
It came in some traditions that the Prophet of Allah (peace be upon him) said:" Prayer (Salah) is the pillar of the deen" .
It is a fact that when the pillars of a fortress falls the entire fortress falls as well and does not benefit from its roofing and bricks. Such is the position of the prayers in Islam. It also came in a hadith that the first thing that shall be reckoned for on the day of Resurrection is the prayer. If it is accepted of a person, all his/her other deeds will be accepted. On the other hand, if it is rejected, all other deeds of his shall be rejected. Hence, our prayers is the last of our religion, the first to be accounted for from our deeds on the day of Resurrection. There would be nothing left of our Islam after the departure of our prayers if the prayers shall be the last of our Islam to be taken away. (All these are from the sayings of Imam Ahmad).
Furthermore, the prayer was the first thing to be made obligatory in Islam and will be the last to be taken away from Islam. Hence, it is the first and last of Islam and if the first and last of Islam is to be taken away, then, the entire Islam is taken away. Imam Ahmad said: "anything whose last of it is taken away has indeed been completely taken away, hence if the prayer of a person is gone of him, then his entire Islam has also gone out of him."
These are the statements of two great Imams (May Allah be please with them) about the position of Salah (prayers) and the loftiness of such trust. If we cast our eyes to the reality of the Ummah today, we shall find to our utter amazement that hardly is this trust discharged as is ought to be. Few are those who observe their prayers from the multitude of the Muslims. This is the obligation of the Lord of the worlds but alas! It has been neglected by those who preferred the gains of the world and those who turned away from the remembrance of their lord
